Kathy Williams

Kathywilliamsartist is an artist cancernes with expanding the possibilities of what painting can be. She uses paint to show what paint can do, how it behaves. And how it can be used as a vehicle of expression. 

Kathy creates work that responds to the environment, space, time and public. She installs painted marks on a transparent surfaces so we see only the paint itself… and not painting an opaque, enclosed surface.

Central to her work is the desire for clear visual communication with the general public and the way she wnables people to understand what turns out as three dimensional abstract painting is simply by inviting them to take part, to add to the existing work or, to create marks and assemble themselves. Kathy’s own teaching and facilitating experience tells her that it is by Doing that others can appreciate the decision processes involved to create a painting. 

For this residency Kathy soon saw the window enclosed a direct view to outside and a bus stop, yet inside was a private space to work. She worked with ideas of inside/ outside, internal/ external, public/ private and art educated / not. Fascinated by these polemics Kathy went in to develop her current project of work called PADA - painting as a Democratic act - questioning a hierarchy of markmaking, public and artist paint interaction and public ownership of a painting that just is not hung in a wall.
