Covid Commissions:
Sue Paraskeva & Julian Winslow
How did you come to work together/why did you want to work together on this commission?
Julian Winslow and I have been working together for several years, this has been in a conventional manner with Julian photographing my ceramics to create promotional material. We have developed an artistic synergy and have never had the opportunity to fully explore this creatively.
Give a brief description of what you’re intending to do in relation to the brief
The starting point of this collaboration is to explore and experiment with material possibilities using threepenny bits imbedded into porcelain vessels, referencing the use of coins resting on the closed eyes of someone who has died. From a first memory to the last. The threepenny bit is made of copper, zinc and nickel, base metals that should respond with porcelain in high temperature firings.
Why does this enable a period of experimentation for your individual or collective practice?
Working remotely and recording our conversations, documenting the work using film and photography, clay and drawings, we will endeavour to respond and experiment with this initial idea and build upon it. We will do this by call and response, posting to each other various components; to start with the coins, and when an experiment has been photographed or fired we will return it in order to develop further ideas, triggering memories and myths from which we can bounce ideas and conversations back and forth in order to experiment and develop this relevant line of work. We are excited to work together, to share our process and final products
