#WeAreRydeArts - Hannah George
I was involved in the Ryde Mennyms project, the wonderful life-size rag dolls made locally and inspired by the magical ‘Mennym’ books by Sylvia Waugh. I designed, wrote for and edited Under Cover, the monthly newspaper devoted to the project which was distributed through the town and online. Producing Undercover was something different to what I normally do but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It was a great team of people to work with and such a stimulating project. I loved the mix of literature and textiles, words and sewing. I was in regular email contact with the author, Sylvia Waugh, and as a result she contributed new writing to the project! The community could submit ideas and text for inclusion in Under Cover; there was a lovely exchange of input, creativity and inspiration between everyone.
I think community participation projects create an energy and positivity that is really valuable. Projects where people can choose their level of engagement are important – some people want to learn and create while others like to be the audience.
The process of participation creates a collective shared memory and enjoyment of each new theme. We were lucky enough to have the fantastic Julian Winslow take our photos. A memorable and fun photoshoot was when we escorted one of the characters, Frank Mennym, on the Island Line. I also have some very funny visual memories of participants and organisers carrying the lifesize dolls around town and them being passengers in cars when we transported them!
